Post  siwood99 on Fri Jan 15, 2010 8:16 am

Last year i was a member of a angling society in hampshire, one of the bylaws they had in place was the use of barbless hooks on lures, what is your opinion ???? What a Face

one of the worst things you can do fro me is use lures (talking jerkbait sizes here) with barbless hooks as they penetrate far deeper, and dont stay in one place so you end up in aright mess.

I beleive that the use of barbless is putting the fish in high risk of damage. when they open their mouth to shake the hook one of the trebbles dislodges and comes out, the flying hook most of the time cathes they in the side of the face or worst still in the eye, there was about twenty percent of the population of pike that were blind in one eye, awfull!!!!

Barbed or Barbless Hooks

Post  noz on Fri Jan 15, 2010 6:27 pm

The problem is that if a water has a rule on hooks, one has to obey it. As for me, having had to go to hospital to have a barbed hook removed ( post last year re this), I must admit I favour barbless, but, having said that, some lures only come with barbed hooks and it can be difficult to replace same. I have tried grinding off barbs with a Dremel, but the stones wear out very quickly so, all in all, it is a bit of a pain. This barb/ barbless debate will run and run, I think.

so what you are saying is that you are happy blinding the fish that you are after rather than getting a hook in your finger??????? isnt this supposed to be about the fish???

i always use barbed hooks when fishing lures for 2 reasons
1: as mentioned above the hook will penetrate deeper causing more damage when barbless (not good with big trebles on big lures)
2: chances are that the fish will be only lip hooked or lightly hooked, giving a greater risk of losing said fish during the fight

Rob these are two very valid reasons but what do you think about making pike blind in oerder to use barbless or crimped lures???? cruel or what???

I can't see how you can say barbless hooks go in deeper than barbed i have used both and they all go in just as deep !!

As for barbed or barbless i use barbed on my lures although i've used barbless before and never had a problem with them !!

Its a personal choice after all !!

I AGREE ADIE
its personal preference/confidence,
my veiws: wait till you get a big barbed lure in your hand, much easier to pull de-barbed hooks out Embarassed

I've had one in my hand Jeff and yes it hurts like hell LOL
And it wouldn't take much to convince me to use barbless hooks on my lures Wink

I only use semi barbed for all my other piking !!

Post  siwood99 on Fri Jan 15, 2010 11:57 pm

Adie, the pool i fished in hampshire had loads of pike with damaged eyes purely as a result of barbless hooks, i personally can be held accountable for at least four fish??? and i aint proud!!! What a Face

Thats a lot of bad luck Shocked Shocked

I can't say i've ever caught one with hook damage to its eyes ( Not saying it doesn't happen )

Can you be sure they were all caused by barbless hooks coming loose ?? Or maybe they were just badly hooked in the eye to start with !!
