Hi mate i totaly get you, but if you had hooked the fish in the mouth with barbed they wouldn't have been shaken loose. You must have been one of the unlucky ones where the lure had only hooked with one hook, leaving a flying hook, this is a terrible thing.

Really depende on the lures that i was using?? jerkbaits was a solid wire leader and crankbaits , i used a trace leader??? do you think the trace would make a sugnificant difference?????

yes. with jerkbaits anyway. the irratic movement of the lure when the pike strikes, the solid traces help the irratic movement of the lure. the size of the trebble 0/4 ?. and the lenth of the lure 6'' plus?. hooked on the belly trebble there is alot hanging out its mouth........ whats your view

barbed or barbless

Post  siwood99 on Sat Jan 16, 2010 12:35 am

Greg i see where you are going with that, however any hungry fish over 6lb will engulf a lure of 8" plus ensuring that the hooks are in the pikes mouth. Obviously i can only give accounts of what in have whitnessed personally, and i have seen them spit the hooks and it then gets attached somewhere else Shocked

si, i just started useing jerkbaits last year. i never had any problems with smaller lures. then i had a go with 6'' jerkbaits. ive had a few close calls around the eye area of pike i landed on them. i'm no expert on this subject. thats what i think could happen. great to use them tho.

As for barbed or barbless i use barbed on my lures although i've used barbless before and never had a problem with them !!

Its a personal choice after all !!

Adie

I AGREE ADIE
its personal preference/confidence,
my veiws: wait till you get a big barbed lure in your hand, much easier to pull de-barbed hooks out Embarassed

well yes provided you dont turn the point in bone that is quite sickening

to elaborate my point barbles go in and come out easily, all good so far now when there is a flyingtreble it goes in comes out twists causing double hookups etc

barbed go in and stay in one place

ive had my fair share of hooks in hands up to 5/0, pinned both hands together accross a lure hooked my fore arm up and plenty more with barbed, to date none have required a visit to a&e ive been able to pull them out or push them through and cut them out

i had a size 2 single stuck in my thumb that i couldnt shift it was barbless and id turned the hook point on bone that needed an a&e trip however i was younger and didnt know how to get them out
