An exciting prospect...
Got permission to fish a water i've had my eye on being a possible good pike water for a few years.
I fished it as a teen (on the sly i am ashamed to admit ) and back then i had pike to mid doubles.
As far as i know it's pretty much been left to get overgrown and neglected, and no one has fished it for at least 8 years (at least not to the owners knowledge).
It could be a nightmare to fish in terms of presenting baits and playing fish in if i do manage to hook one, but i'm really excited at the prospect of it producing something a little bit special...
I will let you know how i get on - i'm off tomorrow - and chances are if things work out I may be allowed to fish it again with one or two other people at a time.
Here's to a good session

just spoke to owner - he says it looks like its in tip-top condition right now after all the ice has thawed and the last person he allowed to fish it (last Jan) swears he lost a 25lb+ biggie (he was an Angling Times journo so he may have been full of s**t ) but managed to bank a few smaller single figure fish that were witnessed.

Re: An exciting prospect...
Well i went, i caught, and it was a good day in general.
I ended up with only a few small, very lean fish to about 4lb - and the biggest i saw was about 8lb - it loved following but not striking!
Tried deads as well as the lures but not a touch on 3 deadbait rods (pop up, drifter float, hard on deck).
I'm not so sure about this places potential anymore - it was gin clear and i didn't see any evidence of bait fish anywhere. Plenty of those lean jacks though so it could be they are just eating each other - if there are still some good fish in there i doubt there will be more than a one or two.
Its not a particularly big water and to make it worse it was so overgrown that there were only two fishable 'pegs' and according to the baliff on a nearby water it suffered badly in the floods 2 years ago and he reckons the biggies and the bait fish may have escaped into a nearby river which is certainly a possibility.
If i can get permission 'll probably go back and try to cut back some trees and rake out a couple of new swims and give it a couple more trys.
Here was the first of the day...quite a pretty little thing...

Re: An exciting prospect...
I've been given the 'all clear' to clear some swims, chop back some branches, rake out some weed etc so that i can fish more comfortably - got a few sessions booked on a nearby lake over spring/summer so will be spending sometime each day then trying to sort the place out a bit. Hopefully it will bring some rewards later this year/next year when the new pike season starts.
I still need convincing that there are pike worth catching in there, but i guess the only way of finding out for sure is putting the time/effort in.
To be honest even if it just turns into a place where i (we?!? lol) can go every now and again and have fun with the lures catching jacks etc it'll be worth it.

it would be good for kid and us alike .....in the summer sun, spinning on a bank and the lad pulls out his first pike...my first jack bout 5lb was caught on one of my/grandads mepps..I tried getting my brother into fishing he'd rarther spend his days on the xbox...
