is it only me who uses the drifter it is areally good method of covering the water in front of you it seems to have gone out of fashion or was it ever in fashion had some good results even on deadbaits i.e roach , skimmer bream ,trout only thing that worrys me about drifter fishing is that your searching virgin water that you could get snagged up in and end up loseing a lot of exspensive braid 200 yard plus affraid affraid affraid

was there before ET
we used to stick dart flights in top of float.
it worked well , as the bait did not go out too fast Very Happy

we didn't use braid, mono greased up to eyeballs, flicking line out to start, then drop bows in line to make bait swing across swim and back again, constant work but very rewarding Very Happy

hi pete try to find out the depth of water in front of you then i would start by fishing half the depth if no bites are comeing alter the depth at 1 foot intervals going deeper and deeper its a bit trail and error at first but you start getting a picture of the bottom contour if the float slows up on the drift the bait is normally dragging bottom this can be a good tactic in cold temps hope this helps you muck i think drifter float fishing is under used clown

and another thing you will be surprized how far a fish will come off the bottom when the bait is drifted over the top

if fishing smaller waters, ie small drains, canals, or small stillwaters, then instead of using the big vanes and large drifters, just use the hi viz dart floats 30g with inline sinker and a size 4 treble hook, with small baits, gold sprats are good has well as other colours, and you can use other small baits with this method just a underarm cast has not to pull the hooks out, ideal when the waters abit chopie with a light breeze.
just put the hook through the back of the fish, on the right day you never know, use a 18 inch trace with one single treble, if you want to try a trace with 2 treble,s the use 6s and put a couple of sprats one on each hook, thats something for the pike too look at.
cheers

here a picci of a small setup.
the drifter float D_DrifterDiagram_01
you can also use a single hook through the top of the bait with the treble lower down giving a good hook hold hopefully, also your strike is pretty quick into the fish, a nice easy method for small lakes etc.
cheers.
