Mackeral oil
Advice please guys...I've read alot about the use of mackeral oil with deads. Was wondering wether shrimp paste or belachan mixed with cod liver oil would have the same effect?

Re: Mackeral oil
I have used many different types of oils, winterised salmon oil, herring oil, mackeral oil, red lamprey oil the list goes on but have found the most successful being pilchard oils.
Have also tried the predator attractant that you brush onto the bait and let dry for a few minutes but not had a single run with it.
I have thought about trying cod liver oil capsules inserted into a bait but not yet got round to it, let us know how you get on with your experimental shrimp cocktail, you could try freezing it into a bait then letting it defrost once cast out

Re: Mackeral oil
I have injected baits with all kinds of stuff in the past - oil from tins of tuna is one of my faves along with that really stinky thai fish sauce you can get.
I think the shrimp paste would wash off quickly unless it was inserted inside the fish somehow.
If you ever get fresh unpeeled prawns, try this: (sorry if it sounds a bit cheffy but i used to be one
Take off the shells/heads etc and put about half a litre of oil in a pan and warm (not fry) it whilst mashing in all the prawn bits - let it simmer really gently for a while whilst you continue to mash it with a potato masher and then let it cool overnight.
In the morning seive off the prawn shells and you are left with a really potent prawn oil
The last lot i did lasted me a whole season and i think helped me catch some nice fish.
With anything like that - if you think it will work, give it a go, you never know!

Re: Mackeral oil
a lot of oils are ok for use and freezing into the bait then when you thaw out the bait it pulls the oil in more, but because they dont have preservtives there shelf life is short, and wintererised oils contain a emulsifer which dont like freezing at low temperatures, the normal mix is 75% oil to 25% flavour, when injecting oil in the bait place it on the ground not on your hand, also once you cast out leave it there has it will leave a scent trail for the pike to home in on hopefuly, that way you dont leave aload of scent trails all over the water, then you can use your 2nd rod to try and find where the pike are laid up, through wobbling, and fishing to feature,s if any and trying different depths, also when using oil does it enhance and give the natural oil of the fish a boost or just mask the bait used.
cheers.
cheers.
