I once went from 30mph to 0mph in a VERY short distance and it was bloody painful Ill tell ya! Nearly wrote me motorbike off he did, by pulling out in front of me.
And I've gone from 55mph to 0mph virtually instantly which hurt even more. Torn deltoid muscles and bruising/burning caused by seatbelt but I managed to walk (crawl) away from it. I was told by the police that they fully expected to see a dead body in the wreckage.
And I couldn't claim even though it was proved to NOT be my fault.
different kettle of fish your not designed for that type of acceleration, and also you have a far greater mass which gives a greater terminal velocity both of those mean it hurts more when you undergo acceleration
Re: chinning heavy weight pike
have not done alot of boat fishing greg the fish i have caught have been small say upto 12lb in a boat i would use a net for a big fish also have a big mat for the boat....... hopfully going to do a bit more boat fishing locally just got a small fishing boatgreg wrote:stubbo wrote:heres a honest answer greg i net my big pike carryb them to the mat in the net unhook them quickly tranfer to weigh sling weigh ,photo carry back to water in weigh sling so no chance of dropping job done

I agree that human bodies are not designed for extremes of acceleration or deceleration but just cast your mind back to school will you? Physics classes in particular.
All particles have mass, no matter how small that particle.
I agree, rapid deceleration will have a greater effect on my body due to it's greater mass and physical differences to the pike. But it WILL have an effect on the pikes body. Don't forget, the pike has mass, just as everything in the universe does.
That mass will throw everything forward when the body comes to a rapid stop. Don't forget, internal organs are not fixed solidly in place but 'suspended' in their location and free to move around.
So yes, going from 30mph to 0mph in a very short time or instantly will have an effect on the pike's body and probably not for the good.
A large pike being lifted by the chin and it's body unsupported can (in my opinion) only be likened to a human dangling from the gallows with the rope around his/her neck. Hanging works by snapping the neck and pulling the spinal cord from the base of the brain. This is called a basilar skull fracture and is a very effective way of killing if done with enough force.
It was a common cause of death within motorsport until the mandatory use of a neck/shoulder/head restraint that the drivers now wear. All it does is stop the head moving too far in relation to the body when a crash (rapid deceleration) occurs. Previously the head would continue in it's movement whilst the body was tightly strapped in and unable to move.
As I've already stated, pike are physically different to humans but, like us, a little support prevents disaster. I can't claim to have never lifted a pike by the chin as that would be hypocritical, but I have changed my ways and always support a pike's body.
I will agree with a comment already said by somebody (forget who) that holding a pike's jaw is a very effective way of controlling the pike. BUT ONLY when said pike is on the mat being unhooked or held for a photo or whilst returning to the water AND the body is being held and supported too.

lefty cmon anthromorphisation doesnt work you cant speculate what a different species may suffer based on how it relates to humans
and physics oooohh
particle mass very schrodingers cat is it a particle or is it a waveform.......also known as the traffic cop joke
do you know how fast you were traveling, scientist who is driving"no but i know were i am"
did physics at A level with a quantum option to get to uni although that was for chemistry
did all the sciences as well as a couple of other a levels (not english before any one starts on spelling)

The word is anthropomorphism and it means giving an animal human characteristics, so doesn't apply in this case.
An example would be when someone says,
"Pike like livebaits because they think, I want that", when they have no idea what they think.
'Word of the week' mind you....well done for bringing it to our attention.
