That's what a sleeper rod is for. You put out your usual setups with your usual baits and you have one rod setup for new rigs, new baits, mad ideas, stuff you aren't sure about and if it doesn't work, no harm done. That's why I bait fish with 4 rods.
I've been assured by an old bloke on my local ressie that the soldiers on leave (they had access when it when it was private during the war) used to use corned beef for pike fishing. I've also heard about pike being caught on sausages, bacon, rats, ducklings, mice and even foam soaked in fish oil.
I think I'll stick to fish mind you.

Yes mate, so did I lol....I was hovering over the delete button for a second there and realised it was just little ol' carrot. I can totally see why that carrot shape would work. It's basically a Kynoch Salmon Plug, except it's made of carrot and not wood. Still, it's bright orange and it floats so why not indeed. I reckon you could easily wobble with a shaped carrot.

Re: most weired bait used for pike?
My mate James went through an 'exotic' bait phase but aimed at Eel, but caught a 6lb pike on a dead chick (that he used to feed his snakes)
He chose that bait as the water fished was full of wild-foul and was just that time of year when chicks were abundant..

That's fairly logical. That's literally 'match the hatch' fishing. I'm much the same, I'll happily switch to lures like silver Toby spoons, small jigs or thing, slim minnow-bait lures or small live/dead baits if pike are concentrating on fry-bashing for instance.

If I remember that article was produced sometime around April, so I'm not entirely sure if that article was a bit of joke. I certainly remember it but I didn't take in any of it without a large pinch of salt but I have heard of various odd baits being used and working, which is the main thing. If pike do have the ability to analyse potential foodstuffs, there's reason to believe they could have a crack at anything that might be edible. They are opportunist scavengers after all. Even still, I don't think anyone's going to find some sort of wonder baits that will rock the pike fishing world. Unusual baits might have their place certainly, especially on pressurised waters but I think you simply cannot beat a freshly killed brown trout, even if the place is stuffed with them.

Re: most weired bait used for pike?
Lets get one thing straight here folks. Pike eat metal, wood, plastic, rubber, tinsel and wool and many other wierd baits that we make into lures. Pike don't follow logic when it comes to what they will eat. Why wouldn't they eat real food as well?

Moving baits are one thing Andy. That's like the cat and the ball of wool but a static bait has be examined to some degree. I reckon a lot of these baits will work but as I say, I think I'd leave such experiments to a sleeper rod and fish my regular setup with tried and tested baits.
I heard a bloke on one forum telling us how he caught a pike on a piece of cheese he was retrieving, which does happen more often than not with anything being wound in but the best part was the reply. The next chap asked,
"What kind of cheese was it?"
You can't write stuff like that...pure comedy...

You can just imagine the numpty asking that rather innocently and then realising what he's said. His face would be a picture.

i have caught pike on worms always very small jacks, i once when carp fishing was retreving my rig i had a take and it was a jack that had been hooked perfrectly on the boillie hair rig!!!! i can only assume that it had seen the hook flashing and thought it was a tasty little roach !!!

Sardines are supposed to be a great bait but I can't get them to stay on the hooks long enough to cast out.
They keep fresh in those tins though.
