Dyed smelts
I bought a load of frozen deadbaits off UK baits, have got a packet of smelts dyed a red colour, never tried dyed baits before, has anyone got any experience of using these baits, I thought I may cut them and use on a kebab rig as they look a bit small for normal double treble rigs.
Off to my new venue on tuesday so any thoughts welcome

theyve worked well on my local canal before for smaller smelt i usually just use a single treble/hook rig through the back and suspended under a float thats worked for me in the past

Many thanks for the reply, may try a single treble rig or a 3 inch hair rig with a single size 6 hook.
The venue responded very well to sea baits last week, did not get a touch off roach deadbaits

I wouldn't be worried about using small smelt. You could use one size 6 treble or even a single. I have not tried colouring baits for a number of years, but if I had some I would use them. Plenty of pike are caught on sprats and the are very small. Try trotting or drifting one with the other on the deck (assuming you are using two rods).

Ive not tried dyed biats other than red sprats and red smokey mackeral. Have had great success on both particularly the mackeral as it bloody stinks

Can't abide dyed baits. Tried them many times and I don't see any advantage. I gave up on them years ago.
