Best time of the day?
Hi all,
What would you say is the best time of day to go piking? I usually find with coarse fishing early and late times are the better times with bites drying up during the middle of the day. Do you find this to be the same with pike or is anytime pike time.

Feeding times seem to vary from water to water, some are extremely accurate where theres only a 2hr window in the entire day. But as a general rule I would rather be on the water earlier than stay later.

Do any of you guys keep detailed diaries. I do and sometimes the blatantly obvious feeding times, are missed unless you can see a trend on paper. Its great to have a morning water and afternoon water near each other, and they do really exist
Re: Best time of the day?
I agree entirely Mr Lowdouble... I have been laughed at a few times by people who think im having a laugh. Then they actually witness it for themselves. I will put myself up there to be laughed at again but, on 1 lake I used to fish very regularly I even knew which fish had a good chance of taking my paternostered sardine at 7.30 am........seems extreme but it happened too often to be coincidence. At certain lakes from years ago I still remember the times now. Trust me, feeding times vary from water to water.but if you are mobile and have discipline to move to the next venue. It can definitely pay off. I log all mine and have done for 25 years . Some say its sad but I know it helps me!

Best time of the day
As I mentioned previously, not seriously fished for pike for years, but got back into it this season, but I can remember that even back then, the feeding times are exactly the same as now on the water I fish, all my activity seems to come around 10.00 am and then about 4 to 4.30pm. This is based on fishing deads static but if we fish sink and draw or a lure a take can come at any time.

Re: Best time of the day?
Thread has been cleaned up as it looked like it could get out of hand
I had to remove the other tread ( A question for you all... )
As that one was really getting out of hand
Back as it should be now

its all been said, some waters from 9.00 untill 11.00 and then back on at 1.30 untill about 3.00, I keep records also, and there is no doubt in my mind that each water is different and following your information on your records undoubtly helps us to catch

Re: Best time of the day?
Spot on newbie, on the waters I fish with feeding spells as defined as yours, i wondered if the feeding just occoured at that time, as thats the swim I was fishing. I changed swims and even boat fished the water in various areas and it was uncanny, If I got takes or fish it was between 2pm and 3pm every time and the water was 400 acres I find that the bigger the waters the more variable the times become, some I fish here in Ireland are 30,000 acres and more
Re: Best time of the day?
the water i fish fish is 22 acres and that seems large wouldnt no were to start on some were so big

Every large water can be broken down into small pieces, theres winter and spring haunts, theres shallow and deep, theres river inlets and theres weed beds. It takes forever to learn but you never get bored
And when you do inevitably blank!!!!! you just blame it on the size of the place, not your Cr*P angling skills

large water
i fished a very big water in wales and it took me the best part of 12 months to find where the good areas to fish and catch on a regular basis and the only feature on this lake is the margins there were no depressions at all to be foundlowdouble wrote:Every large water can be broken down into small pieces, theres winter and spring haunts, theres shallow and deep, theres river inlets and theres weed beds. Re: Best time of the day?
Thats spot on Stubbo. some of these huge loughs can be devoid of fish in about 80% of them. when you find the productive areas they are always productive. Small waters do my head in when your not catching, as you know your near some fish, theyre just not feeding or your doing somthing wrong
Re: Best time of the day?
2 in the afternoon for me. I reckon a good 80% of my better fish have come between 1pm and 3pm.
