Large unhooking mat, forceps, side cutters, long nose pliers & the ability to handle pike and unhook safely. If you are short of any of the items, question whether you should be piking. Don't be fooled, Pike are fragile. find someone that’s experienced and learn.

andy i would disagree over the glove not the use of a glove just the one you list chain link gloves are just a loose weave of holes the trebles happily go into
lindy fish handlers are probably the best all round option for hook protection, although a company called hexarmour do some gloves that suit fishing with trebles as well

I use an old gardening glove sometimes if necessary. Its got a nice bit of soft leather located at the thumb and index finger. Its non abrasive - so its easy on the fish and affords some protection from hooks and teeth. Works a treat!

Thanks for the tip Noodle. I will have a look at them.

A great shout Roly. Thanks for that one. You certainly don't need to spend big to get something suitable.

Not into gloves myself. I think they dull your ability to feel where your fingers are going and what they're coming into contact with. Raker rash tends to occur when chinning fish out of the water but a few grazed knuckles are part of the parcel. When actually unhooking pike, the fish should be subdued on the mat and opening the mouth should be a pretty straightforward affair.
I think gloves could be useful for the novice piker, giving them confidence in handling pike but they should be a temporary affair.
