What pop ups do you use
I've been using the red fox ones (that look like a boilie) and 3 times now I've had a screaming run that I can only assume is carp or tench grabbing the pop up.
Anyone else use these and had same problem

Re: What pop ups do you use
No but I used to soak them in mollasess and use them on zig rigs
For pike I use wine corks preferably from rioja or chateau neuf du pape, and practice foam golf balls

Re: What pop ups do you use
Never had it myself but a few of my mates reckon its happened to them as well. I thought they were making excuses at the time but I've seen a few posts on other forums about it.

I prefer the small balsa sticks.
They fit perfectly inside deadbaits

Re: What pop ups do you use
I use the fox pop up balls son small lengths of trace wire. Usually clip to a split ring at the end of my hook trace
Re: What pop ups do you use
I use the fox ones and not had this problem but I also like the greys prowla twist in pop ups

Those rubbery corks you find in bottles of wine or the Fox jobs.

i can understand how they work but they just seem so unnatural to me surely they would put the pike of, because in coarse fishing its all about hideing your end tackle.

Pike are not as fussy as other fish for some reason

its not its one of two other options, you either want your hookbait to mimick the freebies think light bottom small hook for maggots or hair rigged baits on supple braid
or you want some anti eject property stiffer mono going through to d rigs etc
if pike were put off by unnatural items then firetiger lures would never work and to catch on a mackeral would be miraculous
anglers overcomplicate things far too much
my standard set up is wire that looks like brake cables
Re: What pop ups do you use
i understand what you have to say, a lot of the ideas do come from tackle companys trying to get you to buy there products.
but in my own mind it just seems to obvious, but what do i know, im still learning.

you know enough to target pike and catch em m8tc wrote:i understand what you have to say, a lot of the ideas do come from tackle companys trying to get you to buy there products.

i'm also of the school of thought that people over complicate things. my end tackle is the simplest in the world and if i need to pop em up i use internal pop ups.

Intetnal pop ups may cause pike problems in that a chunk of wood or foam in a fish if the fish comes off isnt too good for a pike
Re: What pop ups do you use
Just because they are internal doesnt mean they arent attached to a trace the prowla ones I use come with a wire trace and I know some of the bolsa wood internal floats do as well. I know foam can be the exception though.

Re: What pop ups do you use
The thing I like about the fox ones is you can use them on frozen bait, but fed up of false runs, I'm tempted to put one on a hair rig and catch the fish that tries it nick it

Put them off like something they've never encountered like a half mackerel or a fluorescent pink shad?
Mate, I use size 4 red VMC trebles, black swivels and clips, silver paperclips, 3-4oz leads, green wire, bright orange pop-ups, sea-baits and on my distance rig, fluoro yellow line. There's no getting away from the fact the fact, it's pretty easy to see and yet, I still still catch my fair share of pike.
I also connect my jerkbaits to 180lb steel wire and the lure doesn't really behave like any fish I've ever seen swim and we haven't even looked at the colours. I use black, white fluoro pink, sunburst and all manner of colours but yet the pike stil fancies a crack at them.

Re: What pop ups do you use
sometimes folk just complicate things if you want your bait off the bottom,, just add something buoyant. dont worry what the pike thinks,, cos usually it just thinks mmmmmmmm dinner
they are a primitive predator and as such will not refuse a free meal. if you blank it's not because of your bait or rig or popup. it's because the pike are not there at the time or are not hungry
coloured pop up mallarkey is now being sold to anglers as the next best thing but believe me, if you put a dead fish in front of a pike it will eat it. wether its popped up with a red capt fandango 5 quid popup or strapped to a des o'connor record,, it will eat it.
keep it simple guys,,,, works for me

Re: What pop ups do you use
When i pop up and its not often i use the red pop up balls on a length of wire
I have in the past when i've been caught out without any pop ups with me used elderberrie pith which is bouyant and natural so it wont hurt the pike if it swollows it just push it down the baits throat just the same as you would with balsa sticks !!
Personally i don't think balsa would harm the pike as it would just pass through its system !!
just think of a pike eating a 3 or 4lb pike and the bone structure it has to cope with
Just my opinion not a fact
( Sits back and waits to be shot down )

Re: What pop ups do you use
I would imagine the pikes stomach acids would dissolve the bones(I have snakes and no rat bones come out the other end)
I wouldn't like to poo out a balsa stick if it was sideways
