Pike Traces - Crimping Tool

Post  raf1870 on Mon Oct 11, 2010 10:33 am

Hi

I intend to make up some wire traces and want to try making up a few crimped traces.

I understand it is best to buy a special crimping tool to do the job but was wondering are the crimping tools all designed to take universal sizes or are some tools designed just to take their own make of crimp?

I seen a couple of crimps on eBay with varying prices but do they all do the same job or are some better at crimping than others?

a pair of pliers does the job. Use the cutter to put 3 or 4 impressions in the crimp, taking care not to cut through. Save yourself some money too.

The Fox Crimping tools looks like it will do the business.

This might sound like a stupid question but do I have to use Fox Crimps as well or will any crimps fit the jaws of the tool?

Cheers

AFAIK they are pretty much a universal fit.

I have Fox crimps but PredX crimping pliers and have never experienced a problem with them or Drennan crimps either.

As do the PredX ones. I think this is becoming a standard feature on pliers now as most that you see for sale have the 'double jaws'

Bought the Fox crimping tool last night.

So going to make up some traces over the next few days and jazz them up with some fly tying material to see if that acts the same as bait flags.

Fingers crossed I get some luck this weekend.

I used to have crimping pliers but wouldn't know where they are now, I just use a pair of pliers now, crimp half one way then turn it 90 degrees and crimp the other half the other way.
