Hi all pike fly fishing near st helens

Post  graylinghunter! on Mon Feb 07, 2011 3:07 pm

Just joined interested in pike fishing on the fly or lure.
I run the popular www.graylinghunter.co.uk site
Looking to find a few local venues in north west that I can fly fish for Pike..
already a member of
st Helens AA
Prince Albert
Corwen and district game fishing....

looking at local venues for fly fishing.. I live in st Helens

I have done a recon to Pennington flash
might give it a go in the morning.
but would like to try other venues.
If anyones local and wants to team up give me a pm

if anyone has any suggestions for a local water with a good head of jacks I would welcome the info.
as ever its a two way street so if grayling fishing info is required I can put you on the fish.. see my web site.

my thoughts to try are.

leads to liverpool canal
southport drains...
parr flash.
Carr mills on the doorstep not enough room to fly fish for pike.
Had a few off a local canal..

Any other ideas welcome........
thanks in advance.
If I catch I will share photos
if information is given discretely by pm I will protect venue again and edit photos accordingly

many thanks for any help..

if your wondering why pike on the fly watch this..

Hi Boys thanks for the warm welcome I am looking forward to meeting to some of my local members with hopes off putting me on some local cast-able venues..
also considering a float tube for where venues are heavily overgrown, I am not sure how big sharp teeth and inflatable craft will get along Laughing
But to start easy casting and wading are my goal along read beds....
I plan to use a wt 10 fly rod for the morning and a good selection of large zonkers...
10lbs (open to suggestions if I should increase lbs strength of line) with a wire trace..
I am not sure how clear my chosen venue will be or if they will follow the lure flies.....but I have got to start somewhere...
The grayling fishing is out on the Dee..due to flood and I have a few days off to go fishing.....
I will be quite happy with a few more jacks for now......and if a big lady comes along then happy days.....

Hi Phil 10lb line is a bit on the weak side you want something like 18lb for lures or even better 50lb braid Wink

I have done some big game fish on 10lbs-13lbs line thought the 10lbs should be enough with a 20lbs trace.....to handle the teeth... Very Happy

Even still, a pike can zoom off at 30mph into some right nasty terrain, snags and stuff. If that pike is any kind of size, you're going to have to let it run and a 10lb leader will have you playing the fish longer than required.

Pike need to be bullied home and released as quickly as possible. They're not salmon or carp and they build up lactic acid very quickly.

I'd go up to 15lb. The leader doesn't have to be long. A couple of feet does it, so there's no problem turning a fly over with a heavy leader.

I will go with that I have 17lbs line in the back I can use its not fluorocarbon but I suspect mr pikes not going to look at the leader but more like attack the lure.
the 10wt rod should be able to tame most fish......in the UK
weather looks OK this morning....slight frost but it should warm up.....

to be fair except for pennington flash wearing some good waders finding a venue has been difficult. Southport drains are the best. LOADS OF SPACE miles of long flat canal style structures with loads of back cast space.
St helens AA waters have a few in but casting is very limited. I supposte you could try river sankey widnes as well. I Havant found any really good waters loaded with hungry feeding fish and this last fish was taken the other week...from an over grown local canal...

also these two smaller ones
