Hello & Help!
Hello to everyone from a Newbie!.I am 52 years old and live near Southend on Sea in Essex.I have been winter pike fishing for thirty years or so.for the last eight years I have been mostly fishing my local the River Chelmer, and have had many pike over the years including a couple of twenties.I have a narrowboat which I have recently moved to the River Nene near Wansford along with my dory. This season I have done OK,with a twenty and several smaller doubles.Does any member know of any hotspots on the Nene, and also if there are Zander present in the Wansford area?, I have never caught a Z and would dearly love to do so..It is a big river,so any local knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks and merry xmas to all

Hi,yes that's a great idea.I was really looking to find out general areas, the size of the average fish caught, and what I could hope to catch from the Nene.

Re: Hello & Help!
Hi Andy,This was only last month on the Nene, weighed in at 21 1/4 in the net,so probably a 20 scraper.I fished with a pal we had 2 fantastic days the river was just coming out of a long flood. The weather was perfect, very mild and rising. We had two 20's two at 17,and several more smaller doubles and jacks. In all 18 fish in the two days, something that doesn't happen (to me) very often!,and only my second proper session on the river.Being new to the river I was thinking of trying one of those cheapy fishfinders, really to survey the banks and find the deep holes.Anybody got one,and more important do they work?.

Re: Hello & Help!
Hello Essoxman, and welcome to the forum, it sounds like you had a heck of a two day adventure, doesnt happen often but when it does its wonderful, a mate has a cheapo depth finder, one that you cast out, he used it twice and reverted back to normal, got to say though it did give a good indication of depth and features.

Re: Hello & Help!
Hi Steve,Yes I really want one as a depth sounder.Being new to the Nene I thought having a transom mounted transducer on my dory,it would be simple to slowly chug up one bank and plot the deeper areas on a map. Then simply turn the boat around and repeat the process on the opposite bank. The Nene seems to be a deep river in places,so finding these deeper areas could be a very worthwhile exercise. On Ebay, you can pick them up for £30ish,BUT do they work?....
