More on uptraces
Having followed various threads on the subject, I gave uptraces a go on Sunday on a float ledger rig.
There was a lots of ice floating around so the uptrace came in handy for extra protection against that.
At first I attached (fixed) a one ounce bomb to the rig. First run resulted in a fish on the bank.
Second run was dropped.
So I tried switching to free running bomb which I threaded on to the uptrace. A large rubber bead was added by forcing it over the swivel. All looked well...Until I cast out...
On the cast, the running lead ran all the way up the uptrace and over the top swivel. With the lead in the wrong place I now had a float that was suspending the lead in mid water and, in effect, a three foot long trace but crucially for the experiment, NO UPTRACE!
So I reverted to the fixed lead and caught another pike.
I have since thought that the running bomb could be PVA'd in place to stop it flying backwards.

Re: More on uptraces
ahh, thanks for that lads. i'm useing the fox ones, twice the price of the roberts ones.
the last pack of fox ones i got the quality was crap. thay are going back to the shop.
looked into the slik rings, but to expensive. but its said thay are better for braid .
as for the uptrace andy, it was said on the last post to use for paternoster upriver fishing. your leads at the bottom of your trace. canni go wrong with that comment.
maybe thats how its better fished.

i use both those and the fox ones.... i prefer the roberts ones because of the solid bead as oppose to the one you get with the fox ones (the soft rubber one that slides over the swivel.... had one pass over the swivel with the force of a cast once).
