Nearly That time of year again!
And I can't wait. Had a good season carp fishing but I'm really long forward to the pike season. Gonna try my hand a a few more rigs and look for a venue where I can livebait too. All the best everyone!

Hopefully I'll get my first 20 this season. Fingers crossed.

how often do we change our lines
just a thought lads how often do you guys change your lines I know some of these lines are very exspensive ie braid which would last probably a lot longer than mono but i think this very importatant bit of kit does get over looked read in some article that it is best to change every season it will depend obviouosly on the terrain you fish ie rocky ground and the snags you encounter over the season i wonder how many of us check our lines for burrs and the likes think mine are due for a change .Can anybody recomend a decent line ie mono that is.

Re: Nearly That time of year again!
Braid i change every 2 seasons - just strip the spool and reverse it back on at the end of season 1.
Best mono for piking i found by a long shot is Pro Logics XLNT in 18lb. Tough as hell and really abraision resistant, yet low diameter, very supple and cheap as chips (£15 for a 1000m spool).
Was put onto this by lads that use it for snag fishing for carp. Only negative thing is it is that does have a bit of excess stretch in it so needs fish or 2 before it properly beds in.

Getting a bit stirr crazy now, checked all my gear two weeks ago, I use braid and do exactly what Tootal does, I am going to Ireland Piking on November 11th for a week, that will soon be here but will have as many sessions as I can from the end of September

Good luck with Ireland Steve.
I want to fish my local drain as i've seen a big girl down there, but its just too weedy to get a line in right now...need it to die off and then i'll be able to fish it again...

I didn't miss one single session last winter, I think more people are scared of the cold, rather than they couldn't fish!

Ditto - and travelling to ice-free waters was a 3hr journey each way....no thanks when you only have about 7 hours of daylight anyway

So there was ice free water then, you just couldn't be bothered to drive to it.

Re: Nearly That time of year again!
I think you'll find it's more a case of not being able to afford either the time or the petrol money mate what with having a newborn baby at home...certainly not because 'I can't be bothered'...please forgive me for putting my piking on the back burner for a season or two while i ensure i give my daughter the best start to life i can. lol.
I can see we are going to get on well. lol.
3 years on the forum and my first falling out...must say something.
I suggest you don't presume you know all the reasons why someone isn't able to drive 3 hrs to fish somewhere in future...

Re: Nearly That time of year again!
Firstly young man, I'm not falling out with any one so I don't know why you see it like that?
Secondly, why write that you wouldn't drive 3hrs because theres not enough daylight when that wasn't the reason at all? I understand that a child comes before fishing. So why didn't you write that in your original post?
My first comment about the cold was tongue in cheek any way, I thought you lot liked a bit of banter or is that only allowed between certain 'members'? Seems that way!
I've heard lots of times how people were forced to spend weeks and weeks indoors and not fishing last winter, but I fished every week,on average about 3 times a week.
It does seem like a lot of todays Pikers don't like the cold!
Andrew.

Re: Nearly That time of year again!
Now now keep it friendly
Andrew you must have been lucky with having waters that weren't frozen in the freeze last year or the year before !
we didn't have anywhere free of ice in our area Not that had any pike in anyway lol
As for not liking the cold most of us fish in all weathers no matter how cold it gets as long as theres some waters free of thick ice minus 14% was the coldest i was out piking last year only bite i had was frostbite lol
I don't think tootall was having a go at you in any way at all he is a great bloke with not a hint of malice in him As i know anyone on here that has met him will tell you
Just a bit of a misunderstanding i think
Adie

Re: Nearly That time of year again!
I apologise if you think that I was out of order and, yes, perhaps I should have explained for you in more detail the reasons i couldn't get out much last winter in my first post before I responded like i did in my second.
But just for the record, I mainly took offence because when someone I don't know tells me 'I can't be bothered' about my pike fishing, I take it as a bit of an insult. At the end of the day it is only a hobby, but one i do take very seriously.
Secondly, i find your tone a bit patronising when you refer to me as 'young man' and imply that i'm one of those pikers that 'don't like the cold', can't take the 'banter' or isn't dedicated enough to drive 3 hrs to get to a venue or fish 3 times a week (lucky for some lol). I fish when i can, and whether thats once a month or once a week, I always give it 100% effort, because as we all know, effort generally equals reward in this game.
I don't want this to turn into an argument, after all we don't even know each other.
We've both said our pieces, so lets forget about it and move on.
Water under the bridge as they say...
