Me and my mate Wanna are gonna try and catch every species of coarse fish in England during 2009. That`s everything from Catfish to minnows etc. We`re not gonna bother with Atlantic Char though because as far as i understand they can`t be caught on conventional rod and line techniques.

That's some task you set yourself there matey.
Hope you manage it and have a great deal of fun trying.
Me and our lass have promised to stop smoking and I intend to get on the banks a bit more this year than I did last year. I'd also like to do more in the way of lure fishing.
And no, I don't mean fishing for lures
All the best for the New Year.

they can you know maggots work well for them now the gwyniad is a little more of a daunting prospect.
will you be going after the shads that swim up the rivers?
Re: newyear targets?
Just gonna target the main coarse fish in England first, i thought the Gwyniad was mainly found in Wales! And we`re really only going for course fish not game so as it`s a sub-species of the salmon we probably won`t bother. I suppose it`s dependent on how well we do, the quicker we get our targets the more and more adventurous we`ll become. No point trying to catch the really difficult species if we can`t catch some of the easier ones. But we`ll do our best. lol

Re: newyear targets?
If anyone would like to suggest a species to us that we might have missed and locations on where we might catch one it would be appreciated.

Re: newyear targets?
Graham, are you including the Carp familly in your quest? if you are i have a small lake, approx half an acre, it has a good head of common, Mirror and Grass Carp, also Perch, Roach, Rudd, silver Bream, Tench and we have even had the odd Eell, it does not get fished commercially, just my familly and friends, you are more than welcome to fish it.

Excellent mate, sounds like a plan. Thank you. Grassy`s were one of the species i was pondering about. They seem few and far between. Would prefer to come in the warmer months if that`s ok.

Graham, you can come any time you like, and there is an invite to any other user of this forum, i have two log cabins, with electric etc, they sleep 3 people ideal for any one with kids that are interested in fishing, i do like to see the place being used and enjoyed, all you need to bring with you are sleeping bags and grub, just give about three or four weeks notice, the only payment i need is to treat the place with respect, as i know most good anglers do anyway.

Re: newyear targets?
Just so you know Graham. It's Arctic Char. Our Char are landlocked and stopped running to sea like the rest of the game species when the ice-sheets receded after the last Ice-Age and so they became a landlocked species like the Powan, Gwyniad, Pollan, Schelly etc. The Atlantic Char, is the sea-running type still found in paces like Alaska, Norway etc. Same species separated by a few thousand years of 'warm' weather....lol
If you want a Char, you CAN catch them on conventional methods from many glacial lochs, especially up here in Scotland.

Tell us about Fishing up in Norway. I had the pleasure of staying near Lillehammer one March a few years ago. I had a train journey from Oslo airport to Lillehammer & can remember passing many frozen lakes. Some had 4x4 cars driving on them & we watched in amazement you wouldn't dare try that on an English lake
