lure hook size/rod strength??
I have an 8ft Wychwood agitator lure rod, ive had 4 takes on it but only landed the 2 with the lures with smaller hooks, the other two came straight off but the lures where a bit bigger and hooks were twice the size, the rod is quite thin and im just wondering if it isn't powerful enough to set the bigger hooks

Re: lure hook size/rod strength??
what is the weight rating of it?
have you been silly and gone barbless?
mono/braid are you hitting takes or just self hooking against the lure
today ive caught perch and pike on a rod with a max casting weight if 7gms the pike took a 2inch shad with a 3gm head on a size 2 hook
on my heavier rods lures have hooks up to 5/0 all have braid and the drag is practically locked up (i backwind with fixed spool reels).
what lures are you using?

Re: lure hook size/rod strength??
i had forgotten about this sorry
what are the weights on those?
tbh id start with simple lures that are proven and easy to work one i can never recommend enough is the long a from bomber your rod will throw the magnum sized ones at its upper limit. id also try some simple soft plastics to start with that work for everyone
shads around the 5-6 inch mark or grubs of a similar size
oh and the most important bit your hooks need to be sticky sharp owners are highly rated for that reason but i like ones i can actually hone the point on eagle claw 374's are a very good starting point. dont be afraid to take the hooks of a new lure and put others on.
one other thing play with the drag you only want it to give line grudgingly if its too loose you wont set the hooks or hold them in place.
ah one more thing you havnt crushed the barbs down have you?

Re: lure hook size/rod strength??
the lures are weigh 42g 36g 22g the lighter one i had no probs hooking fish, my drag is tight and I haven't crushed the barbs,
its just put me off using bigger lures,
but I will get some of the ones you mention and see how I go

John it a storm kickin stick, nice lure, Mick Brown (bearded guru/legend) uses em since going with shimano & rapala and has had some fish with em.
I've a good few follows on my diving jointed minnowstick (deep and standard) but not (yet) managed to get a fish on the hooks, i like em as they suspend..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
going back on topic, are the hooks sharp? it sounds to be that the hooks are setting in as they seem blunt, a quick sharpen will do the trick..
