best / fave lure colours
What colour or colours do you rate best for lures?
There is so much choice its hard to pick when the same lure comes in so many colours. even spoons are silver or copper or other colours. i like yellows and reds by the way.

Re: best / fave lure colours
Different colours for different situations.
From what I can gather (I'm still a newbie at lure fishing) the different colours are for when the water is coloured or clear, or for bright days and overcast days for example.
Hopefully somebody more experienced can help you there.
How about it guys (or gals), something like a write up on different types/colours of lure and what situations you would use them in?

I personally find I do best on Green/Fire Tiger, Red Tiger, or White/Red Head for the lures and silver spinners. Not sure what the fish think tho.

Re: best / fave lure colours
I am a total novice but if you ask me from what i have seen the colours shapes and types do have a in different situations but mostly to catch anglers.
fish in same spot for half an hour with 4 or 5 different sorts of plugs and then put a slow spin high flash spinner on and bang two fish one after the other. So i think it is what they want on the day.
But that is only my opinion but will never think nothing is there just because i dont have a take in first 5 mins

Re: best / fave lure colours
metaalics like silver gold copper bronze etc
white with black
black
stoopid coplours like firetiger
pink
depends on the water i fish quite a few moory waters so they tend to be quite peat stained and the way to go there is qith the white with a few black stripes for contrast
in all honesty i dont think its the colour that matters as such its the 'glow' you get of em in colored water
in gin clear water is got to be black then black then deep blue or purple

Did you catch on them? Wait till they pike have spawned and then you'll see what the Slider is all about.....if it doesn't very quickly become your No.1 banker lure of choice, I'll buy the lot off you....

Yeah mate, I got the beast in my profile pic. Had about 20 casts with a Shakespeare Doubble S and then changed to a 10cm Floating in RGT and 1st cast in same place with that produced the 20. Hope its the start of a good run.
Wish they wernt so expensive tho lol.
Cheers for all the advice mate, its brought me a lot of good fish.

Re: best / fave lure colours
Forget the expense mate. It's nigh on impossible to lose the floating versions. They're literally bombproof and I've had some for nearly 6-7 years....I think?? (God has it been that long?)
As long as you have strong braid (ie:50lb+) you shouldn't lose any of your Sliders. The hooks will straighten as long as you wrap your braid (just make sure the braid doesn't overlap or it'll cut into itself) round a bit of wood (some lure anglers actually carry a short length of broomstick for this very purpose) and gently take up the tension on the lure and then pull slowly but surely. If it's the hooks that are snagged, you will get your lure back.
.....Regards.....Andy.....
PS: I'm glad you appreciate the advice. It makes me feel all...sniff!!...warm inside...lol
Just glad to help mate.

Re: best / fave lure colours
it depends entirely on what they want on the day.... my main banker lure is one i accidentally lost in a tree a few weeks ago (sob), one of the newer shakespeare big 's' lures, it was semi transparent perch pattern.
for clear waters i'd say natural colours have outperformed the more extravagant patterns like firetiger or day-glo colours for me over the years, whereas in coloured waters its the opposite way round.
i think this is because the more outlandish colours/patterns stand out more in coloured water than naturals.
and lets not forget the difference a rattle can sometimes make either.... especially at night.

Re: best / fave lure colours
as i only fly fish for pike, the colour would have to be roach pattern or white/red.

Re: best / fave lure colours
I used to tie intricate flies (like Lefty's Deceivers) for pike and then they just got simpler and simpler, until I ended up whipping bunches of red, white or black marabou onto a size 2/0 - 4/0 Aberdeen hook. Basically they're very simple streamers but they look much the same as mackerel feathers. I soon learnt it's not the fly that catches the pike but the action that fly gear gives the fly. It's almost impossible to replicate with any other kind of tackle. The strip, the pause, the dart.....awwww man, they just can't take it and they have to have it. I honestly don't think pike fly patterns matter much at all. It's the strip and pause action that does it. I'm 100% sure of it. It's just so..... irresistible.
.....Regards.....Andy.....
PS: I had 19 pike to fly one day. That's the largest (but not the heaviest) number of Pike I've had in a single session, which lasted 3 hours btw. I had so much fun that day. I didn't land any monsters but I enjoyed every second of it.

i found i can catch more pike on a fly in a day + its more fun.
best fish on a fly so far has been a 25+,mammoth battle, memorable day but then catching any fish on a homemade fly is a cherished memory

Re: best / fave lure colours
I have tried out many colors in different water colors but I end up with red/white and silver as the best choises at the end.
This season I planning trying out pike fly fishing and some US lures. Im right now developing a new kind of lure which will work in weedy places hopefully.Wish me luck .
