The Lake District Newbie Empty The Lake District Newbie

Post  thomps11 Thu Nov 25, 2010 4:39 pm

Hi there guys,
Hope your all well, I've been a coarse and sea fisher for many years but have recently took up piking. Im a total novice but fish grasmere, Esthwaite water and some of the other waters in the lake district.
Been fishing a couple of times on deadbaits this week, both blanked (not a bite!), just wondered if any of you guys had any luck this week...or, most likely, im being a muppet with my locations/rigs/baits you name it!

Thanks loads

steve

Hi Thomps

I am also on a run of blanks. I am hoping to put that right on Sunday, weather permitting. Keep persevering and try any likely looking new spots.

Good luck

ANdy

Andy,

Hi there, good luck on Sunday mate, its looking like a cold one but I think we might just get away with it on the west coast. I'll keep on trying to learn these new waters and methods, I've only been pike fishing twice before so its all new..seen them caught by mates and Im dying to get into it!

Let me know how you get on on sunday mate, where you fishing?

Find the waters local tackle shops and buy some deads from Him/her.The people in the shops around the lakes seem really helpfull and will get you started.

Anglers are another source but like you do they keep the best spots for themselves Sad

I'd be fishing in the 10' + depths at this time of year. The pike will have moved into deeper water and the preyfish should be shoaling up now too. Leave the shallows till spawing time. You might get the very odd fish in shallow water here and there but the rewards don't add up for the amount of effort IMO.

Perhaps a move to another spot is in order.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Andy, reckon your right there, I guess its logical that the pike will follow the bait down deep in this colder weather, so look for the drop offs from the shore or the boat might be the best chance?

Noodle,

Thanks for asking, generally using carp type rod, fixed spool and baitrunners with 25lb braid, terminal tackle for deadbaiting - standard running ledger with 18 inch wire trace, smelt, mackerel and lamprey popped up.
Tried a simple float rig with various baits and also a few spinners, alien eel and rapala shad...no joy.

What you reckon lads, thoughts? scratch

Thomps....set up a marker float and go plumbing swims. You'll learn more in a couple of hours than you would sat behind rods cast to nowhere. If you have to fish over shelves, set up a float/leger rig or your braid will part like cotton. I'd even switch to 18lb mono if there were shelves to fish over.

Steve

bar the red bit all sounds ok

braid really need to be heavier in all honesty (barring one or two brands) if you work around 0.35 mm dia you wont struggle as much with rocks in the long term
another one fish the lead on a weak link a few waters up your way are tackle grave yards and doing that will get you your traces back far nore often.
