Small River Piking Empty Small River Piking

Post  alanhred Mon Jan 30, 2012 12:05 pm

Any advice on tackling a river, probably no more than 20ft wide and fairly shallow at 1-3ft deep. Can be fairly fast flowing but normally just a steady flow and there's plenty of streamer weed. Lots of Gudgeon, Roach, Perch and Chub but also a healthy head of Pike. Saw a 10lb'er caught at the weekend after taking a blokes Gudgeon as he reeled it in. Any tips on how to tackle it using deads? Rolling Eyes Question

catch a gudgeon, then kill it. then use sink and draw tactics. or use a small silver plug.

I would be tempted to take a roving approach travelling light, working as many swims as possible using sink and draw tactics. good luck.

Look for the pikey looking swims but don't discount chucking out a bait with a lead in the middle in the flow. Had some 20's from well know southern chalk streams (not too sure on naming policies) in the most unlikely looking swims! fish can be quite literally under your feet aswell
