Re: dead bating rod
i personally wouldnt use any rod for deadbait pike fishing under a 2.5lb test curve, that way if you hook into a big 1 youve atleast got a chance!
but as u progress a dedicated pike rod is a must buy! because carp rods tend to be very soft tipped! wheres a pike rod bends right down to the butt!

I have just bought a couple of the Wychwood Solace 2 3/4lb 12ft rods, they are good light rods, slim blanks and have a through action, picked them up from a tackle shop in Doncaster

I'm in same boat tigger,
I have only been deadbaiting ONCE in my piking life and this was with bazz...........He brought 4 rods with him 2 pike and 2 carp, i do believe...to me they have no difference between them.
I've heard of so many brands of rods it's like a kid in a sweet shop...
I do believe you can use a carp rod for deadbaiting
if you're after a pike rod, whats youre buget ? Fox do bait rods for around £50 i have looked on Ebay and i have found a setup for around the same price...

Also for the 'lads' would this be a good starter set for someone like me who is new to deadbaiting?.
Re: dead bating rod
have a look at these guys, i have the same rod but not the reel, i can strongly recomend it

Re: dead bating rod
i use Shakespeare pike rods. 3lb tc,12' long. only cost me £40 each new . i've been pike fishing now for more than 20 years, and in that time ive had lots of rods even whisker kevlars at £180 each and take it from me these rods i have now even though cheap are the best all round pike rods that i have ever had .
rods are very much a personal choice, it all comes down to what FEELS right in your hand (no smut intended lol). i would recommend though that you go for a 12' rod with a test curve of 2.3/4lb to 3lb. this should do you for 90% of your pike fishing needs. go to a tackle shop that has rods on display, pick them up and have a play with them and see what you like the feel of, and dont just dismiss the cheaper rods on offer

Re: dead bating rod
I have to agree with MBA in that you are better off actually getting hold of the rods and seeing how they feel. Preferably with reel attached.
I use a carp rod of 2.5lb TC and have to say that even though it is a cheapo (£12.50 new!!!) it has done me well and landed pike up to my PB of 16lb 8oz. The only problem with it is weight.
So, for Christmas I'm getting a nice new one.
Wychwood Reaction 2.75lb TC which is primarily a carp rod but will be used for pike in winter and carp all year round. Had hold of it and it feels good to hold, nicely balanced, lightweight (compared to old rod), carbon and available for around £30.
Others may disagree, but to me it seems the ideal rod for MY requirements and is within the price range that my missus can comfortably afford (it will be my main pressie from her and the kids).

Re: dead bating rod
I got one of these combos for carping in the summer and have used it a few times for deadsies on the river and its done me very well. Handled big carp and my 1st pike on the rod which was 14lb no bother. I used the line for carping but wouldnt for pike. I put braid on the reel and its running really well.
