Signs of spawning?
There's been a few mentions of Pike spawning on the forum and it got me thinking.
How do you know when Pike have spawned on a particular venue?

Re: Signs of spawning?
the big girls at cellars are all loved up, well some are, seen a rather big girl in the margin by the inlet yesterday and she had 5 jacks all round, on top, under her, felt sorry for her and then had a wicked thought, once she's done the biss she'll eat one of the jacks so ste and sue went round pike spotting last night and there are a few laid up, so no pike fishing for a few weeks

Re: Signs of spawning?
Just got back from my walk with the dog, Went to our local waters that are closed, And lo and behold i have seen 4 different places where the big girls are spawning, looks like a war dance in the reeds, as the pike are thrashing about, One big girl came out of the reeds like a bullit, strait accross the water towards me, Good size Pike
spawning
you dont cos its differant times for each lake/loch generaly the further south you are the sooner they spawn and the highlands and clacial lochs spawn last but there hungry once spawned and rested i do think pike fishing regardless of other closed seasons should have its own to protect the fish

Totaly agree, One of the resavoirs i fish, Piking is now closed till september, Seems a long time to be closed for pikers, Other fishing is allowed, But i think it saves a lot of stress that is put on the Pike,
Meant to say also that out of the three rivers that are local to me, Nothing seems to be spawning in the other two, Very strange, As you would think if one started the others would follow,
Re: Signs of spawning?
perhaps the other two mayget get colder water from the hills or no warm water pumped in via factories just a thoughtpaddy pike wrote:essox_lucius1 wrote:you dont cos its differant times for each lake/loch generaly the further south you are the sooner they spawn and the highlands and clacial lochs spawn last but there hungry once spawned and rested i do think pike fishing regardless of other closed seasons should have its own to protect the fish

Re: Signs of spawning?
No hills or factory's for these rivers, As they are drains from a marsh land, But the only difference is the three rivers have a different bottom, stony, clay, & sand, But the water they drain is from different areas, But not many miles seperate them,
Re: Signs of spawning?
I had a few hrs Lure fishing on Sunday. There were fish thrashing around in the shallows probably Pike.... A bloke was deadbaiting nearby & reckoned he had caught 3 doubles to 15lb! but he's somebody I have come across a few times & I think he has a bit of a good imagination..
Of course, all I caught was the undergrowth & tree's..

Blimy Bazz your luck is as bad as The Rons, Me and Him a week or so ago, went to a local canal, His bestest float was lost, His spinner and line stuck high up a tree, He snagged the bottom and lost a good home made spoon haha,
Re: Signs of spawning?
The key factor is water temperature, the pike start spawning whe water reaches 45 F. Here in Finland between the souther cost of the Baltic, and the tundra regions in Lapland, deep into the Artic Polar Circle, there is a difference of two months in the spawning time.

I can well believe it.... I went Nordik Skiiing near Lillehammer in Norway a few years back, people were driving their 4x4's on the frozen lakes there & skiing in March! I guess Finland is even colder.

Re: Signs of spawning?
If I tell you that I haven´t seen the floor since I went to Spain in november, I think that this white crap is not gonna melt down until the next winter. I don´t fish a pike since the en of septembre.

Indeed in southern Spain they do it by midfebruary, not very usual to see pike spawning in Andalucía or Extremadura after the first week of march, even in the north, I come from Vasque Country, where the weather is almost the same as in the south of England, they usually finish the spawning by the second week of march, depending ofcourse how were the winter temperatures and rains.

Re: Signs of spawning?
I was wondering if this cold snap would affect the spawning, As the water tempriture must be dropping
