does any one know how much extra weight say a 27lb pike would put on when it is full off eggs. And if it sent it over the 30 mark would you be happy to call it a genuin 30lb fish. What i mean do you think its ok to target pike at spawning time Very Happy

if its carrying spawn when caught its still a fish at that size in my eye,s,ie 30lb then its a true 30 lber.As for fishing for them if you do get one just treat it carefully[has we allways do anyway] an just get it back in water asap. Very Happy

A 27 might go 32 as the eggs are hydrated shortly before spawning occurs.

Whatever it was before, it's a 32 alright. As long as you don't do a Nige and add any tench yourself, it doesn't matter if he pike is full of eggs, fat from being on holiday, overweight because it likes to eat leads, has a belly full of perch and hasn't been for a jobby. It weighs what it weighs.

You cannot account for what you cannot see.

On the other hand, I only get on the scales in the morning, before I have eaten and after I've had a jobby.

You been hanging about with Nige? That's his trick. "Oh look, there's a tench in it's throat. Good job it weighed 40 before it fell out completely intact and partially frozen!"

I might be exaggerating but it sounded good didn't it?... geek

I don't think I've caught one in spawn before...

Is is simple to see the difference between being spawned up and just being a bit of a porker?

Perhaps someone has a photo they could kindly put up so I could inspect? I'd really appreciate it if so

Cheers lads

Oh you'll know. Round about late February to April, any females you catch that haven't already spawned will be carrying spawn. If they're as thin as pencils, they've dropped spawn already.
