Re: flyfishing for pike
I tried fly fishing once. Got a tired arm and no distance
It was along time ago and a mate of mine has said on a number of occasions recently that he would like to give it a try. I know it won't be for pike as he is scared of them.
Would a 'normal' fly fishing setup be ok or do you need specialised stuff? (Is that a daft question?)
If specialised stuff is required, would this then be too 'heavy' for normal fly fishing?

Re: flyfishing for pike
you can get away with a 8 or 9 weight outfit providing the fly is not to big but if your catching quiet big pike the rod might not be up to the job ie it might take to long to play the fish in .

Re: flyfishing for pike
I have used a 10' Toothy Critter fly rod 10#(weight) for 15years now, i overload it by using 11# flyline, overloading only serves the purpose of giving me a better balance for flies i tie and use, some are big.
reel:any(to carry line),disc drag is not really nessasery, makes i use are rimmfly, leeda LC80,and now in use is an Airflo Balance 7/9(this reel does as it says on the tin).
4'to6' of mono leader to a 10"to12" titanium tip(no swivels).

Re: flyfishing for pike
not sure what type of cross-lock you refer to , but i use berkley, never had a problem with them.stubbo wrote:good idea with the loops not lover of cross locks lost a good fish once on one reluctant to use them again .....cheers jeffesoxjeff wrote:Hi Stubbo

the type i use are in this pic minus the swivel.
the ones on the run-ring are a weak type just in case of snagging this rig.

Re: flyfishing for pike
jeff thought i would have ago at fly fishing for pike but where do you get the bait from looked all over today and not seen one must be too cold for them.
can you get them from tackle shop's may ask when i am down at bentley today.
do i need any special sort or will house ones do ?
heard they use different colours but did not know you could paint them if so what paint do i need.
heard of a fly tying vice can understand why you would need one due to thier size but would i get away with the 6" record one if i lined the jaws so it did not hurt thier feet.
do i leave them in vice while they dry . and what do i keep them in is it a fly box that i have heard about ?

A:big uns,i mean huge.......

A:any paint will do, it's usually getting the old colour off with the blow-torch that kills them..........

A:if using a 6"record no need for jaw linings, just stand vice on their feet, they'll never lift it off.........

A:keep them in your pockets with them maggots that are in there.......
