Re: re 40lb braid
If I was fishing a water with no snags, no shelves and nothing that would offer one line an advantage over the other, I would probably opt for braid because I like the indication, the hook-up ratio, the feel of the fight and all that but I don't fish such venues.
I have spools filled with braid and mono and sometimes I fish both because the venues I fish have numerous features to contend with. Some are best fished with mono and some are best fished with braid.
I sometimes have to fish over shelves with float-leger rigs and thick mono, because to do otherwise, would see my line damaged to the point where it would be dangerous to use. Braid would be suicide.
On the other hand, might have a bait on a drifter over some heavy weed-beds. In that case, braid would be the better option because it floats, there's no stretch and it offers greater stopping power and weed cutting properties.
These are just instances but it demonstrates that you shouldn't rank one line over the other because they both have their place.
For lure fishing (pike) I prefer braid. I still use mono in rivers or when fishing for trout, perch etc.

Re: re 40lb braid
I too moved over to braid recently. 40lb Power Pro to be exact.
I love using it but have still kept the reel with mono on it for the reasons spelt out by Andy above.
However as I know the venues I fish are relatively snag free I don't bother taking the reel with mono on it.
If I fish a new venue then I will take along my mono reel a few times until I find out if there are any snags and then would go back to braid if possible.

Re: re 40lb braid
I agree with Robh. I have tried it with ledgered deadbaits at 2-3 rod lengths out & prefer Mono. I have tried 30lb braid for a short time on the local weedy dissused Canal with a small Plug & it was great, casts so smoothly, a Jack did have a grab at my lure & i could feel it straight away

Re: re 40lb braid
been using braid for over 10yrs now. would never go back
center-pin reels are good for piking, but i would not go back to using one as fixed-spool are so much easier?

i use power-pro braid and mono for deadbaiting, i prefer everything about the braid, but mono does have its place something i found out when i fished a loch with a steep shelf , makes braid a no go

I don't think he was suggesting there were Jeff. He's only saying the same thing myself and Lefty did. Braid and shelves don't mix...that's all.

Re: re 40lb braid
i've been using braid for some very long distance deadbaiting- the distance involves a remote control boat- ive had no problems- in fact the results have been staggering!!

A chap was drifter fishing a little Perch livebait today. He was using the white floating braid at various distances but not close in,,

Re: re 40lb braid
Apparently braid doesn't stand up as well as mono with regards to abrasion.
If this is wrong please feel free to correct me.

Re: re 40lb braid
Hi Lefty i don't know where AM gets his info from , but i found braid will resist abrasion more than any mono made.
mono is made with (polymer 6)where braid is made from (polymer 6/6)as used in Gortex.

Re: re 40lb braid
Looks like I'll just keep the reel with mono on for the odd pier/harbour/off rocks/maybe boat trips then.

Re: re 40lb braid
I like my 18lb mono for close range deadbaiting, can't see any problems with it....but i don't like the way it becomes twisted in such a short time. On the other hand i had some good wind knots to undo on my braid today, a drawback with using braid. The two Jacks didn't half feel good on it with a nine foot light spinning rod, mind you I could get to like mobile lure fishing, and hey, not lugging around all that tackle!! Must say the 42" net & 6 foot handle seemed overkill!
