Re: live baits
not sure exactly where the law came from maybe yvonne whatever had something to do with it but from what ive heard personally its to do with the likes of loch lommond and other sites of great historical notiriety now having there own ruff etc population which are thriving from being brought north of the border by no offence meant " an english man".
i mean personally i dont care im friendly with a guy called brian hewit who does the match fishing up here and weve had lengthy discussions on this subject with me telling him ive had tench to a size and him telling me he put them in that 20 years ago and where there are monster carp that do not get fished for which he also helped accomodate but nowdays in the nanny state we live in your not even allowed to use a live fish that u c atch from the water you are fishing,,,, its a ridiculous law which i will never obay

Unfortunately its people posting quotes like that on an open forum that will damage all angling in the long run.
Please think before you post!!!

Re: live baits
I know this is an old post, But I was looking for some tips on hooking live bait, I like to fish whilst waiting for pike mostly for perch or trout. I fancy trying a live bait as I've never done it before. I would think there is a specific way to hook the live bait to ensure it stays alive? Is it just throught the lip? through the tail?.
Any reply is appreciated.

Re: live baits
Believe it or not, I was just reading about that. I didn't know it was banned in all forms in Scotland, I thought You could live bait as long as the live bait was caught on the water. Nevermind.
I can understand the point in banning it after reading about the un-natural arrival of the Ruffe.

I thought it was a new post until I read this and looked at the date
I don't live bait, I won't say why cos someone will say "we'll you don't mind setting a bunch of trebles in a pikes mouth"

Re: live baits
I have only livebaited for pike on one occasion but see nothing wrong with it - as long as it's done sensibly (size of bait etc..)
To me, it's the most natural way of fishing for pike. Afterall, pike are tuned into the distress signal given out by injured/dying fish as they represent an easy meal. Why waste energy chasing down a fit and healthy meal

Re: live baits
I use roach, rudd, but my favourite are gudgeon, those little suckers do their best to pull under full sized pike floats
I've only had jack pike and specimen pearch on live bait though
I only live bait in summer. My routine usually exists of live baiting all day, taking the expired baits off the hook and placing them in sun for the rest of the day. Then as night falls I use them as dead bait for big eels, they work really well
Big eels are a challenge to unhook at night though....Remember to take loads of newspaper and get them on their backs quick...An excellent way to end a summers day of fishing

Re: live baits
these days i don't live bait, not because i have anything against it and in the past i have used them to good effect both paternostered and roving under a float. now i just ledger deads and keep things simple but its entirely personal preference. ask adie how simple my stillwater ledgering setup is but it works for me and i catch a few fish.
the most advanced i go nowadays is to pop baits up above weed occasionally or on a big water with wave action i may hook a dead in the same fashion as a livebait under a float and let the wave action animate it about a foot from bottom.
