Pike Traces - Crimping Tool
Hi
I intend to make up some wire traces and want to try making up a few crimped traces.
I understand it is best to buy a special crimping tool to do the job but was wondering are the crimping tools all designed to take universal sizes or are some tools designed just to take their own make of crimp?
I seen a couple of crimps on eBay with varying prices but do they all do the same job or are some better at crimping than others?

Re: Pike Traces - Crimping Tool
a pair of pliers does the job. Use the cutter to put 3 or 4 impressions in the crimp, taking care not to cut through. Save yourself some money too.

Re: Pike Traces - Crimping Tool
The Fox Crimping tools looks like it will do the business.
This might sound like a stupid question but do I have to use Fox Crimps as well or will any crimps fit the jaws of the tool?
Cheers

Re: Pike Traces - Crimping Tool
AFAIK they are pretty much a universal fit.
I have Fox crimps but PredX crimping pliers and have never experienced a problem with them or Drennan crimps either.

As do the PredX ones. I think this is becoming a standard feature on pliers now as most that you see for sale have the 'double jaws'

mine dont mind you they are rapala ones and cost the best part of 30 quid before the fox ones came out
ive used the fox though and they are good
Re: Pike Traces - Crimping Tool
Bought the Fox crimping tool last night.
So going to make up some traces over the next few days and jazz them up with some fly tying material to see if that acts the same as bait flags.
Fingers crossed I get some luck this weekend.

I used to have crimping pliers but wouldn't know where they are now, I just use a pair of pliers now, crimp half one way then turn it 90 degrees and crimp the other half the other way.

God i must be the only old arris on here as i still spin my wire traces, And never use crimps, But i might give it a go just so i can say i have used them, I dont think the results are any different with either

I spin all my hook traces too Paddy and I've never used a twiddling stick, its flying forceps all the way for me.
I crimp lure traces though.

I still twist all my traces mate, aneal the wire then twist it up with the twiddlin stick. Strong as any crimped trace, with out the extra expense of crimps.

I too prefer to use the twist method. I do have a set of crimping pliers and have indeed used them but all my traces are twisted, bait or lure.
I do, however, use a twiddling stick though after smashing my face with a pair of locking pliers in full flight

Re: Pike Traces - Crimping Tool
I get a much neater stronger and tighter finish by using a twidlin stick rather than spinning. Each to their own.

I've noticed that too, Andy.

It's not too difficult really, Paddy. I show how to use it here:

Hope it helps.
