rods for pike
would a beachcaster be too stiff for pike fishing? and would a carp rod ( 2lb test) be ok ?

Re: rods for pike
I think a beach caster is a bit much to be honest with you mate, I would recomend a rod of 2.5lb tc and up.
Reason for the 2.5lb and up is the power of pike, while they don't go all day the surges that they do can be something to behold and a 2lb rod will really struggle/won't be able to turn a subsantial sized fish from snags etc., better to be prepared than under-gunned.

Thinking about it, what beach caster is it you've got mate? Probably be alright with a 4-6oz one.

Re: rods for pike
I have in the past used a beach caster for pike, Only because i took the wrong rod bag, When i caught a pike my mate said it was like being a bully, As you can just wind them into the net
Re: rods for pike
Hence why I asked what rating it is, and why I originaly said it might be a bit much. A 4-6 oz might well be alright for big girls. However I would still recomend the use of a carp/pike rod of 2.5-3.25lb tc myself.

Re: rods for pike
I use a 4lb TC spod rod for pike but that's for some pretty extreme swims. Even my 3.25lb rod is a bit much for most swims, where 3lb TCs will do.
A beachcaster will do at a push but it's by no means ideal. I'd rather use a beach rod than a spinning rod...put it that way.

I think the catfish might have had something to do with it....lol
Actually mate I have no idea but mine is a few years old and it's seen more than a handful of fish and no bother so far.

Re: rods for pike
the problem is playing a big fish on a stiff rod at close quarters where there is a sudden surge in powernickcarpy wrote:no some one who used a spod rod for catfish, anyway it shattered in play[tip] he posted it up on a site and a few others had same problem?is it because there action is not for playing fish or a fluke?

Re: rods for pike
That's probably how I've escaped any disasters. Mine is only a 4lb TC spod and quite forgiving at that, compared to some of the heavier models that take up to 6oz with tippier actions.

Bet you can sling a decent bait and lead with them a fair way
I use the same rods for Pike that I do Carp, Nash Hooligun XS 2.75's...feel i'm at a bit of a disadvantage at times, considering gettin a 3.25 for range work...maybe even a 3.5.
