Shimano Aerlex 8000 XS
Anyone used these for their deadbait work? Think I am gonna treat myself to a couple if the reviews are favorable. Seem like the best value for money and are lighter than the similar emcasts etc...

Re: Shimano Aerlex 8000 XS
I've been looking at these for a while now, but can't make my mind up whether to go for one of them, an Alivio 6000/10000FA or a Baitrunner ST6000/10000RA.
The specs are as follows:
AERLEX XS
Model Number Weight (g) Line Capacity (mm/m) Gear Ratio
AERLEXXS6000 595 0,40-140/ 0,45-100/ 0,50-80 3,8:1
AERLEXXS7000 580 0,40-250/ 0,45-210/ 0,50-160 3,8:1
AERLEXXS8000 610 0,40-320/ 0,45-270/ 0,50-220 3,8:1
ALIVIO FA
Model Number Weight(g) Line Capacity (mm/m) Gear Ratio
ALV6000FA 590 0,30-270/0,35-240/0,40-140 4.9:1
ALV10000FA 580 0,30-510/0,35-380/0,40-260 4.9:1
BAITRUNNER ST RA
Model Number Weight (g) Line Capacity (mm/m) Gear Ratio
BTRST6000RA 550 0,30-270/ 0,35-240/ 0,40-140 4.6:1
BTRST10000RA 540 0,30-500/ 0,35-350/ 0,40-250 4.6:1
From what I've read, the Aerlex are well built reels and were originally designed and used for beachcasting. I've not read a bad review yet.
I have the Alivio 2500RB and 4000RB already and really like them. I also have a Baitrunner ST2500FA "baby Baitrunner" for ledgering/targetting bream, tench, large perch.
I already have a freespool reel for pike/carp but this is the only reel I have that isn't a Shimano. Getting the Baitrunner would mean all my reels are Shimano.

Re: Shimano Aerlex 8000 XS
I think the emcasts are 4,6:1 and the Aerlex are 3,8:1

Re: Shimano Aerlex 8000 XS
Biomaster XTB/XSB both have a gear ratio of 4.6:1 but the XSB weighs slightly less at 705g versus 725g for the XTB.
Emcast are indeed 4.6:1

Re: Shimano Aerlex 8000 XS
take the hint about the retrieve ratio ive owned aerlex's and a good few others
they are slow and with the big handle it takes a while to crank stuff back.
if you can live with that though they are very robust reels and take lots and lots of abuse

IHad a feel and wind of one at Phils Bait 'n' Tackle, seem very nice and well made,
but I ain't a big pit fan, i'd rarther stick to my GTE6000C's

Re: Shimano Aerlex 8000 XS
Nice one tootall.
I've done some digging around and can manage to get the Alivio 6000FA and the 10000FA for £47.99. Why they are both the same price is a little puzzling, but the 10000 holds more line and weighs slightly less so may probably go for that one.
I don't NEED a new baitrunner as my old Wychwood Rogue freespin reel is still going strong. And it is usable for piking but the freespool facility is redundant when doing so.
One thing I have noticed though a couple of times when using the Wychwood reel, on a decent sized cast, there's not a great deal of line left on the reel (stated capacity @ 15lb is 186yds).
The Shimano Alivio 10000 FA can hold twice this.

absolutly lovely reels i swappen my log cast baitrunners for these and i wouldnt change them.
i have other reels which are my 1st choice though for pike fishing, that is based on them being simpler and far more robust (all stainless and brass internals)
