Reel Choice
Just wondering what peoples choice of reel is on here (for deadbaiting), as I'm thinking of treating myself next month to a set of new ones.
Currently i'm using Daiwa Emcast Advanced 5000's but i have had a couple of issues with them recently (quick drag locking up on me and resulting in lost fish (twice! one was a catfish and would have nbeen my PB!) , reel handle folding in on me during playing a fish etc) , so thinking of swapping them over for use on my carp spod/marker rods and getting something new.

reel choice
To be honest Tootal, i,m a Shimano Baitrunner man myself. Fantastic reels, never had an issue with them. Drag superb. Just cant fault them. Mine are the old ones though ( 20yrs ) so cant say what the new ones are like but there are loads of good makes out there but i dont know about them i,m afraid matey.
They suit my style of fishing perfectly as i dont cast to the horizon.

Re: Reel Choice
I only ever buy Shimano reels as I've always found them to run faultlessly!
I've got a Shimano 6000GTE which is nice but the one I love to use is the 8000XTEA, it feels like silk when cranking and makes the 6000 feel cheap!!

Re: Reel Choice
shimano 8000 gte bs for dead bait 5000 gte bs for livebait lovely and smooth also use 5000s on boat rod for trolling on sneaker rods
One thing i do now is wind the drag OFF all my reels when i have finished fishing and reset it at the start of a session.(Had one reel lock up with a nice fish on not long back and did not give line when i check it was locked up and i need to slack off and reajust and it was fine so now slack all drags and reset probably everyone dose it anyway and i'm just thick lol )

Good tip that Kell, I had the same thing the other day playing a nice fish.....just as well I use 20lb nylon and not braid or I fear it would have been lost.
I'll be turning the drag off at the end of the day from now on, again good thinking Kell

put the normal caps back on then, always hated those baitrunner cap things.
ive the emcast advanced as well and cant fault them well one thing actually one of the spools has a little oxidisation on it from hurling sandeels into the sea and i never bothered cleaning it.
as for whats out there now not much tbh most is cheap overpriced tat and the decent reels wouldnt look out of place bolted onto some 18 year olds saxo.
penn surfblasters...........
go on have a look
Re: Reel Choice
if your after a bait runner reel have a look at the okuma powerliner pro on climax tackle £50 each.i use these on my pike and carp rods and cant fault them super smooth reels, crank handle, fast retrieve,10 ball bearings and big spools.you also get a 5 year warranty with them

Re: Reel Choice
ive used the penns for sea fishing and thought they lacked abit of backbone when reeling bigger fish up the rocks but off the beach they performed well.the mitchell avospod is a great reel and highly recomend it to anyone thinking of buying 1,they are near indestuctable and built to last a lifetime

which ones?
if its the newer surfmasters a lot of complaints floated about re the lack of grunt and the colour rubbing off, the originals were a different beast altogether but were not deemed big enough in some camps
they are the same size sort of spool as the aerlex biomasters so i couldnt see the logic in that, mine get used for all the rough jobs i wouldnt fancy using the emcasts for. Dont get me wrong the daiwas are nice smooth reels but ive more faith in the longevity of the penns (im getting on for having them for ten years now casting big chunks of fish and hefty leads in all weathers and hauling pike up through rocks etc, plus a few sea trips

noodle it was the newer penn reels i had i did'nt have much faith in them after my 1st sea trip on the rocks so i retired them to the garage and back to using my 6yr old penns and still no problems mate
