Favourite Lures

What's your favourite lures?

Being fairly new to the pike fishing game, I've had most of my success with the black or red flying C. If I'm having no luck whatsoever, I'll throw out the "C" and 80% of the time I'll get some action.

I've also had regular catches with this type of lure (excuse my ignorance on naming this):

.....it dives to a kinda mid depth and will float if left stationary. Run this thing past tree lines and I get following pike striking about 5ft from where I'm standing.

I've been trying similar lures to these things lately.......but with no luck

My favourite lures are the Rapala Super Shad Raps in roach pattern or red and white colour, That looks like a Rapala lure in the pic mate.

The pic I posted is just a web search...........the ones I use are cheap and nasty copies

similar style, but coloured in black n' silver.

So what is the right name for this type of lure? (tackle shops are intimidating places if you dunno WTF you are talking about!)

Looks like a Rapala Darter to me mate, Get yourself some Shad Raps the Goldfish pattern/colour is a good one too. They are a bit pricey at £12.00 but worth it. I have plenty of lures in the £2.50 to £5.00 price range and they do the job just as good.

A plug or a crankbait (like your red/white plug and Rapala Super Shad Raps), is a lure with a built in action, that only requires a retrieve to produce that action. Plugs and cranks normally have a diving vane or bill at the front of the lure that, in conjunction with the retrieve, produces a wobble or built-in action.
A jerkbait is a plastic or wooden lure without an in-built action as such. In order to produce any action the angler must impart movement with 'jerks' or any kind of motion he or she sees fit. That's as simple as I can make it. Examples would be the Salmo Slider, The Ace Sweet Shad 66 and the Fox Runt.
Spinners, spinnerbaits (like your Flying C and the furry coat-hanger type lure), bucktails, buzzbaits all basically do the same thing. A straight retrieve acts against a hinged blade that revolves on a wire frame, in order to create lift, noise and visual attraction.
Soft plastics (Dawgs, twin-tails, shads, grubs etc) take various guises. They can imitate fish or they can look like nothing in nature. The point is the same, the provide movement, visual attraction and texture.
Spoons (Abu Toby, Ace Atlantic, Kuusamo Professor) naturally took their name from the pieces of cutlery. The handle would be separated from the bowl and both parts would be shaped, drilled, fitted with split-rings, trebles and swivels and you'd be left with two useful lures. Spoons are now factory made but the principle remains the same.
There are other lures types but this is just a very rough guide. The subject is far bigger than I can possibly describe but it's a start.

spinner baits are next to useless if you want my opinon bent bits of wire they may be but pike catchers no chance

I've had 99% success rate using spinners. Surely it depends where you are fishing ........no?

I agree with you 100% there mate, Mepps spinners or spinnerbaits outfish plugs and jerkbaits all the time.

Depends on where you fish. I've never been to 2 venues that respond to lures in quite the same way. My favourite pike lures are...in no particular order...

4" Pink Shad
11cm Jointed Abu Terminator (silver/black)
60 gram floating Salmo Slider (shiner or real roach)
Ace Sweet Shad 66 (orange firetiger)

The Salmo Slider is the daddy though. That for me is the best lure ever made. You can jerk it, fish it fast, fish it slow, fish it on a straight retrieve, troll it and basically make it up as you go along and it'll catch fish. The small and medium versions catch their fair share of fish too and you don't need specialist lure tackle to use them. A powerful fixed spool setup will fish them no bother. If you ever want to change your mind about spinners, this is the lure to do it with. They last for years too.

Not got many lures but going to have a go at making some this winter so I guess they will become my favourites, won't they?

YES!!!....................lol

That's the thing with lure fishing. Your favourite is the one that's catching for you at the time. You should give the sliders a bash. They just keep proving themselves time and time again. This pike thought it was tasty. I just thought it was funny. Can you tell?
