some advice on luring for pike please

Post  chrisyw1987 on Wed May 01, 2013 10:00 pm

iv never caught a pike by luring and want to try it on a loch thats hardly ever fished due to its location. Can anyone tell me if a 10ft spinning rod is ok for luring? im hoping the pike will strike due to them never seeing a lure and what weather is ideal for luring realy?? i hear its summer then i hear its autumn.

Ten feet is a little long for lure fishing imho. The longer the rod the more tiring it becomes, especially if you're using heavy lures. That said, if it's all you've got then use it.

Pike will take lures at any time of the year but water clarity is important. I like it to be quite clear but not absolutely gin clear, they are the conditions in which i do best.

Use big lures, they catch more and bigger fish.

Don't take this the wrong way, but the way you're thinking you're going to take a long time to get to grips with lure fishing. The things you need to think about in your lures imho are running depth, size, action, colour and castability. You're right to think about getting a proper lure setup but my advice would be to go heavy with your gear. get a stiff rod, use heavy braid and cast big lures. It'll pay off in the end.

Have a chuck about with the lure rod while your deadbaiting, that's how I got into it, once you have caught one on lure you will want more, it really is exciting stuff especially when they strike under the rod tip.
I caught 4 the other day only small but it really is good fun

yeah was thinkn about that although the spot im going to is a 1 rod limit and is a 40min hike past a loch and through a marsh to get to the loch i intend on visiting. although that would be great because no ghillies will indure that its a long way to carry alot of gear.

If its a 1 rod limit it doesn't stop you having a lure rod set up too, have a go with the lure before you cast your deadbait out, then if you decide to recast your deadbait, get the lure rod out for a while before you recast, then at the end of the day when you wind your deadbait in have a few casts of the lure, best of both worlds Wink

If you do go the lure way, I personally, at the places I fish, (mostly the Severn at the mo') will spend at least 20 mins at each swim, and use a variety of spoons, spinners and plugs at different depths and speeds.

I have seen guys in boats whilst I am out bankside stop in a promising looking spot that I can't reach, just cast a couple of times and then move on, Which to me seems not to be getting the best from their equipment.

Whilst at least twice in the last two weeks, I have switched from a medium depth plug to a 3" Norwich spoon, and caught fish in the same place the plug had just been!

It's all about total coverage of the water, and sometimes what you may be presenting may not be of interest, whilst something else that goes in front of the fish a couple of mins later will grab it's attention. It could also be that you have just annoyed the thing into biting (this theory was mooted by an old boy to me years ago, who always cast several times in each spot).
