any reccomendations for good trebles to use for deadbaiting traces, was using owner but find them a bit expensive

Re: what trebles
owner hooks are good,
if you are ever misfourtunate to lose a rig a problem occurs?
pike could pick baited rig up?
if you new how long it takes for them to rust/rot down you'd think again.
i did some tests last year ....
drennan, mustad,et,and the like all rotted down.
owner hooks are still like new?

Re: what trebles
drennan super carbon size 6 are excellent for deadbaiting.... when snagged you just give a firm but very steady pressure and 9 times out of 10 you bend the hook out which you can then put back into shape easily with forceps/pliers, and yet i have never had them bend out on a good fish.
i've tried others and all have failed to impress me compared to them

Re: what trebles
I use the Fox semi barbed and have had no problems.....well, they are easier to unsnare from a net BUT i have lost the only fish i have managed to hook on them, the four i have banked ALL were caught on barbed, two on the Lure last Sunday. I have had no trouble unhooking the barbed one's from the Pike, either (the net was another matter ).
I will persevere with the semi's on the deadbait rigs, they do seem more humane.

WAY TO GO LADS
i would sooner straighten a hook and loose a fish ,than leave gear in one, to die a slow death.

Re: what trebles
i use the Fox predator treble semi barbless-- similar to the drennan super carbon as robh says they straighten out on a snag but never had one straighten on a fish and a dropped run or lost fish is an extreme rarity i think i lost a fish two years ago! i have utmost confidence in them, i think they may be more expensive than the Owner hooks- i used the Owner hooks for a while but i was experiencing rather a lot of damage to the pikes mouth, they were cutting them and leaving torn tissue in the pikes mouth- just as if the pike had been chewing razor blades- i had the same experience with the Owner carp hooks needless to say i no longer use them-- thats it-- they were called cutting point- and that is exactly what they done-any body else experience the same?????

Re: what trebles
Dave & Greg
sounds like you'r on the right train of thought.
i tried pre-rusting some brands of hooks last year.
by
putting them in a tin,
add a couple of rusty nails/bolts,
add a small amount of water, not quite enough to cover them,
stand test tin on a radiator,
let all water evapperate and dry out,
add more water and repeat process for a few weeks.
remove hooks and test to see how they bend or break.
THEN imagine HOW LONG they would be in a pike before they rot?????

Re: what trebles
Hi Greg
i did the test over 4 weeks(on a hot radiator), try it out.
most commercial hooks are good, its the gauge of wire that counts. drennan, vmc, mustad etc... are all very good.
but stainless or nickel hooks take a long long time to deterate.

lol i forgot to mention.... when deadbaiting i always use semi barbless.... that way if the worst happens then the fish should shed the hooks fairly quickly

Every Lure i have ever bought have had Barbed hooks fitted standard, including this Rapala one. Must be for a reason... I would sooner use barbless, of course, both for the sake of the fish AND my net/fingers...

well i have to put our quarry first jeff..... my uncle taught me well.
luckily its only happened to me once, i got a run and the fish had got around something sticking up sub-surface in the water by the time i hit the run. after seeing alot of boils on the surface as i held the line tight in an effort to turn the fish and get it back round the snag (the boils were appearing at a distinct right angle from where the line was pointing into the water) the line parted and i lost the entire rig.
i would have been alot more concerned for the fish's safety had i been using barbed hooks instead of barbless but i have full confidence that the hooks were shed in due course and the fish was able to carry on as normal
