Re: Anyone Catching
Went out today to the new venue, got there at 8.00am & the lake was nealy frozen all over, found a small area of bank that had some clear water, thought I would give it a couple of hours, after 5 minutes of flicking a deadbait in the margins I had a small dropback but lost the fish within the first minute.
As the wind helped clear the ice from the margins I placed deadbaits on the clear water/ice line.
First pike on the bank an hour later, fished until 3.00pm with the session producing 4 runs that produce 3 pike on the bank, no size as they were all jacks, 7.02, 8.09 & 9.10.
Loved it as guy said I was wasting my time and a rod rattled off to produce the 8lb fish.
Only problem I have now is 2 trips for 7 jacks from the lake, I am thinking of starting to use bigger baits to try to get a better quality of fish. have only used deadbaits on the bottom or poped up, would float fished baits have any effect.
I would welcome any suggestions.

Re: Anybody Catching
Crib, I don't think you're too far off the decent fish mark. I tend to fall into the 'anything under 10lbs qualifies as a jack' routine but really, a 9lb fish isn't that bad.
I don't belive bigger baits or a change of method will bring you bigger fish TBH, although a prebaiting campaign might, if you can manage it. It'll take some doing but as one big pike moves in, the smaller pike move out and so it progresses, upwards and onwards.

Re: Anybody Catching
Was out day before yesterday on the river, didn't manage to catch, had 1 take but lost it within 5 seconds. Highlight was observing a barn owl hunting as the light was fading. Sat watching it dealing with it's prey, which I assume was a mouse or vole, on the opposite bank no further than 20 yards from me, didn't seem bothered by my presence
Just waiting for first light to get an early start.
